Where to rent affordable housing in a 2 hour radius from NYC?

I need to move to NYC area but I can't afford to move into the boroughs right now. I am looking for a room for around $300 a month in a town maybe somewhere in Long Island or Connecticut or Philly or Jersey - somewhere within a couple of hours by bus where I can take public transportation and get to NY in a couple of hours. Where should I look? It has to have public transportation to NY & be affordable.

  1. Wow. For $300 in the NYC area is going to be a little tough to find without roommates. Try looking in NJ and PA on both of the Delaware river by route 80. Have fun! Mistress Dolly
  2. $300 a month? Forget it. Nowhere around NY, not even within 2 hours. Try the Poconos in PA, thats about 2 hours from NYC. But $300 is not realistic. Cheapest I have seen in NJ is $750 and that was a while ago..../
  3. The average rent for a room in Queens and Long Island is $500/mo., rarely do you see a room for at least $400. If budget is really tight, you may wanna look in Jersey City or the Bronx, those areas might be cheaper.
