Anyone know where in the Mission District I can find affordable housing?

I have heard or I should say read a lot about the Mission District of SF. Same as any place it has it's good and bad parts. I've lived in NY all my life and have always wanted to live in SF, but I have yet been able to visit. I will be traveling soon to SF for business and leisure and would like some feed back on where to start looking. I have children so the schools are important and a top priority,thanks!

1. PRIVATE SCHOOLS!! The SF schools suck big time, almost no one uses them. The schools may be in good neighborhoods, but they bus kids in from the projects. It is seriously bad, unless your kid is already into the gang thing and you approve you will need to get into a private school. You will need an agent to find a property. The prices are about the same as NYC.
