I want to do Americorps in NYC, is it possible to find affordable housing on the living allowance?

I've found a few programs that say they provide housing, but the benefits they list in the job descriptions are very ambiguous. Obviously it isn't about the money, but I want to be able to be able to survive and with the cost of living in the city, I wasn't sure what most people do.

1. I was an Americorps volunteer in Wy. and there would have been no way I could have paid the rent with the given stipend. For the hours you work you are essentially working for way below minimum wage. I have no idea how volunteers survive in the city without help of others. Perhaps look for roommates. The experience was well worth it though!
