Should I follow up on a job application even when there are no jobs currently available?
I have applied at several stores just to be able to apply and just get my name and resume out there for consideration. It is my first job. The companies I have applied to do not currently have any open positions. I have read all over to follow up on an application, but most of these refer to an actual AVAILABLE JOB POSITION. If they are not hiring, should I still follow up on my application?

- I don't think it would do any harm in making a few phone calls- asking if they got your CV. If they say there are currently no vacancies just ask them to keep you on file for future vacancies. Good luck!
- Maybe to show you care.
- Yes, follow up on the application just to let them know you are serious and you just never know what may happen. My company has been on a hiring freeze for several years already, laid off about 1/3 of the company 2 years ago and did a few more lay offs this year, people who are fired or quit aren't being replaced, things have gotten very very tight. However, when one of my coworkers quit recently, they did decide we needed to hire someone else--in spite of everything. A guy who'd been laid off a year ago had sent in his resume a year ago, and then about 2 weels ago (right after my coworker quit) decided to put in a call just to check in to see how things were going...and they asked him to come in for an interview and he's now our newest hiree. So you never know when you might get lucky. No one's hiring, sure, but people do retire and people do quit, some new moms decide to stay home and nor come back to work, some people get hired away by other places, and their positions have to be filled (companies are down about as low as they can go before they become dysfunctional). So call. Even if you don't get hired, at least you can feel you did everything you could.
- persistants paysoff. Thats all I have to say.
