What are the career prospects of being a Search Engine Optimizer?

I want to join a course on Search Engine Optimization, in hopes of getting a job. Although I have come to know that it is a promising career, I would like to know what are my career prospects going to be as a Fresher in this domain. Also, are there any chances of international placements in SEO for freshers? What is the payscale that a fresher in SEO can expect in India?

I've never heard of people specializing in SEO. I usually thought that paying for SEO for one's website was a scam and basically that you just had to have good content and update it regularly to attract traffic to your website. Basically, I thought that you couldn't bribe Yahoo or Google into getting a higher ranking but instead you had to earn it by having a great site.

I've been doing it full time (along with affiliate marketing, consulting, etc) since 1999. There is good money to be made. That being said you need 3.1 things... 1) Have a site up and offer good services 1.1) Results - be able to show some quick demos of the services you can offer and their results 2) Traffic to your offer and 3) Action (get items 1 & 2 done) A few locations you should keep your eye on for what others are offering in this space, pricing, etc is * scriptlance.com * getafreelancer.com * elance.com and * odesk.com Decide what services you're willing to offer, get a site up and start presenting your offer. Even if you have to do a few very low cost jobs to get some 'proof' & testimonials under your wings, it's worth it. Don't get me wrong, it's not a push-button easy profession but it is very realistic if you focus and work....and get eyeballs on your site. Hope this helps. - Sean
