Can anyone tell me their personal experience in the career field of Seamanship?

What are the aspects of this career? I am graduating in Sioux Falls, SD. 18 years old. I am planning on going to Tongue Point, OR in Job Corps to train the Seamanship. I've looked at the basics of the career but would like to hear people's experience with this career. What will I learn? If there is any golden rules I should know before going into this career, what are they? & Will I be out at sea A LOT? Are there any good books or things I should learn that you recommend?
