How do I search for new career opportunities without risking the job I have?

I've hated my job since I started 3 years ago and it keeps getting worse. However, everyone knows that the economy sucks and you've got to suck it up and bring in the paycheck. How can I keep searching for something that won't make me miserable without risking the security of the job I have?

  1. you don't need to let your current employer know your looking for a new job. just don't search for other jobs over a company computer or on company time. when you find a job let them know you need to give notice to your current employer before you can start. and then give your current employer two weeks notice.
  2. I do not think searching for new job will affect security of the current job you have. You can manage these things discretely. You can basically get in touch with placement consultants who would obviously not disclose your identity. You can also apply on job portals without giving explicit details. And do not think you current employer would be so naive. They know that in today's situation everyone is searching for better job opportunity , you may be surprised to know that even you CEO could be in that list !
