New york hotel on Craigslist?

We are planning to go late Aug. 2009 1. Have you try using craigslist on vacation rentals for craigslist? 2. How was your experience? 3. What should we watch out for? 4. Are they safe? Some of them seem a like scam? 5. We have 6 people in our party, which is why we wanted an apt.? PLease let me know of any afforable rentals.. The hotel are too cheap and my friends don't want to stay at a hostel. Thank you so much for your help!

1. one of the biggest clues that it is a scam is requesting money be sent via Western Union or other wire transfer that can't be traced. I'd also say while corresponding that you you have a friend in NY and you'd like them to come by to see the place before sending payment, If you never hear from them again, you'll know why. I'd also ask for the zipcode and cross streets and then call the precinct for that area to see if it is a safe area if you are unfamiliar with it. Good luck..
