How to I narrow down my list of colleges?

I have a long list of colleges that I am looking at but I have having difficulties narrowing my list of some 400's schools down to a reasonable 20ish. Do you have any tips or know of any websites that could make this process a little easier or quicker? Thanks!

  1. FIgure out what area you want to live in. consider transportation. Most high school go getters ready to see the world don't really understand how far 8 hours is from home. Then, which schools are the best fit for you. For me, I was an education major, which you can get just about anywhere, so I found one that was a good fit in other ways. Small classes, beautiful campus, nice field period program. Depending upon what you want to study, you don't need to go to the biggest and best.
  2. first go to in state no out of state second choose comunity and take the basics there first transfer it will make life so much easyer
  3. collegeboard.com helps you with that. You can narrow it down by If you want to go to school out of state or not, because you have to pay out of state fees then public or private? then what's your major or minor? Some schools may not have a dept for what you want to study then geographically it's importance? and see if some schools have things like financial aid if you need it or good scholarships and you can look at the organizations they offer.
  4. You need to decide what's really important to you and go from there. Peterson's has a college search function that allows you to narrow down your college choices by deciding what you want most out of college: http://www.petersons.com/ugchannel/code/searches/srchCrit1.asp
