- Move. If you want a dog, why did you move into a place that doesn't allow dogs?
- So move somewhere that does allow for dogs. As for a therapy dog, no. A Service dog, yes, but you have to be declared to have a disability. Therapy dogs are just dogs that are taken to hospitals, nursing homes, etc. to visit people. Your neighbor doesn't know what he's talking about.
- What does Prop 8 have to do with dogs??? I suggest you wait until your lease is over and then move to a pet friendly apartment building. If you get a dog and the landlord doesn't want dogs in his apartments it will just stir up trouble for you and the dog.
- Start looking for a new place to live. If you lie, you could get into a lot of trouble. Kicked out of your apartment. Remember some neighbors are squealers.
- A therapy dog is not accorded any special accommodations. What your neighbor was talking about was a service dog. Unless you have a disability which a dog has been trained to mitigate for you, you do not have any legitimate right to have a service dog. People who abuse the rights of others and fraudulently pass off a pet animal as a service animal jeopardize the rights of those who legitimately need a service animal. If having a dog is very important to you, you need to find housing where a dog is allowed.
- If you want a dog, you would be better off looking for a place to live that allows them. Who will believe it's a therapy dog if you leave it at home while you go to work all day? This fake therapy dog scam is making a bad name for Real Therapy Dogs and their owners. You could get into some trouble with a fake therapy dog and anyway you'd need a psychiatrist to write the recommendation. . . and wouldn't that look interesting on your next job application?
- I'm writing from the US, so I don't know if the same rules apply. HERE, if your CURRENT lease allows dogs, they have to honor the current lease. They could outlaw dogs on the NEW lease, but can't change the rules on the current lease after you've both signed it. If the same rules apply there, you may be able to keep your dog until you sign a new lease, and by then you could decide to just move to a new apartment that does allow dogs.
- If you don't need a therapy dog there is no way any association is going to give you one. Most apartment buildings don't allow dogs--self owned condos being the exception--so if your burning need for a dog maybe you should find some place else to live.
- Ask yourself if you'd be prepared to move if you get a dog and end up evicted over it, or will that dog end up in a shelter because you aren't able to move?
- You should really just move. However,I am not allowed pets, but I still have a dog,a cat,2 birds,10 fish, 2 rats and 2 guinea pigs.I just take them to a friendÅ› place on inspection day. Well....not the fish,I got permission for them, lol.
- You would have to convince your doctor to diagnose you will some sort of disabling ailment, and in writing state that in his opinion this disability substantially limits your level of functioning (walking, breathing, toileting, speaking...) to a legal level of disability and that your dog is necessary and provides crucial assistance in order for you to live without constant care. Said simply, your doctor would be committing fraud and you would be committing fraud. A therapy dog is a pet dog that has undergone some training and now visits with their non-disabled the elderly or hospitals to cheer people up. The only reason a dog could be required in no-dog housing is if they were necessary for their disabled partner. Yes, if they are emotional support animals (in-home companions for people with disabilities) only they are still allowed, but that is because their disabled partner needs them. It is a reasonable accommodation for someone with a disability. The dog can have the highest training in the world and perform every service dog task ever created, but they wouldn't get a pass in a no-dog apartment unless their partner was disabled.
