How do I ask for an apartment rent reduction?

I've been letting my apartment for a year. The rent prices have dropped in my town lately (recession), so I want to put in writing a letter to my landlord asking for a rent reduction - what should I say and not say?

  1. First, you'd better consider what's going on in your apartment complex. Is it fully leased out or full of vacancies? If it's full, you will not be likely to get a sympathetic response.
  2. Write a simple note explaining you will be moving because rents are less in other places. Say that you would be happy to stay if they can meet the market rate but otherwise you will have to leave at the end of your lease.
  3. Attach some comparisions of like apartments in your area to show your landlord whats happening in the area. He may loose other tenants if he is not competitive with other landlords. Back up your rent request with facts.
