How do I remove the original housing to a ducted exhaust fan?

I have removed the fan assembly and discovered that the old housing is plastic. The new fan comes complete with metal housing I assume it is up to code, but which I doubt the plastic housing is. My problem is, the old housing is nailed to the stud surrounding the ceiling using a metal bracket in the opening, and I can't get behind it to get it out. Will it hurt anything to just literally tear it out?

  1. Other than the ceiling, no it won't hurt anything. I will assume you removed the electrical feed wire first. You might try to just cut the nail off with a saw-saw or even a hand held hack saw blade. The other thing that can be done is to drill the head of the nail off, or to grind it down. You might find that you damage the dry wall or plaster in the ceiling quite a bit if you just tear it out
