Can you lease another apartment while still living in a current apartment?

I am trying to move from my current apartment and my lease ends July 31, 2009 and the only available apartment I could find is available July 22. Can I lease the new apartment now but not move in until I move out of my current apartment? I work where I currently live and don't plan on quitting until I get my final paycheck.
