This is my qualifications summary. Its kinda like a skills section but it goes at the beginning of the resume. Does it make sense? Can you suggest other ways of expressing the same message? Qualifications Summary Hard working, Self-Motivated Disc Jockey with nine years in the entertainment industry, experienced in collaborating with a team to achieve marketing expectations within specific deadlines. Proficient in desktop communications software such as MS Word, Excel and Internet. - Sorry to say this doesn't make the cut. It's full of jargon. It doesn't distinguish YOU from anybody else. What do YOU do that nobody else does? Also, what is your focus: DJ or computer proficiency? Call me old-fashioned, but I think you mean Latino, not Latin (they've been dead a very long time). Heck, I've got a friend who began working 30 years ago who's been earning over $100K most of that time and who can legitimately write the same summary that you've written. On the other hand, I've been retired for several years and also can write the same summary. The only change either of us would make is to change the words "Disc Jockey". In other words, you've written a generic summary. MEGO. I suggest you re-write this entirely, beginning with what makes YOU special. I'm sure you're very good at what you do, but this doesn't say it. I think you can do better.
- I think you've done a fairly good job, compared to most I see. However, I would recommend sticking with the facts and leaving out the opinions. The fact that you have 9 years experience as a DJ is a fact and, assuming you are applying for a DJ position, very relevant. Hard working and self-motivated are personal opinions, and don't mean anything to the reader. Same goes with quick learner, advanced interpersonal skills, etc. "Fluent in English and Spanish" is a fact. "Advanced interpersonal skills" is an opinion. I would also recommend deciding what is relevant to what you are applying for. Again, if you're applying for a position as a DJ, your 9 years experience is very relevant, but perhaps your computer skills aren't as much (not saying your computer skills can't be on your resume, but to prioritize them so high on your DJ resume may not be beneficial). Hope that helps - good luck! Michael Howard www.alternativeresumes.com
