  1. Share your bills with a roommate or two. And be a waitress. You will meet plenty of other aspiring actresses in that line of work.
  2. Get a place in Queens
  3. There are actually low-cost buildings that cater specifically to models and actresses. A friend of mine happens to live in one in Manhattan. I believe she has 2 roommates, but she only pays about $600/month--which, for Manhattan, is a steal. Before that she lived in a hotel for women on 34th street near 11th or 12th Ave. Every woman has a private room, there is a shared kitchen, and the rent includes two meals a day. It's kind of like living in a dorm, and the rent is pretty cheap. As for myself, I'm a native New Yorker and as such, I realize that living in Manhattan is not the be all end all that out-of-towners seem to think it is. You will end up paying a lot more for much less space. Try checking out the outer boroughs--Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx. You'll find much more affordable apts. with a lot more space. I live in Flushing, Queens and have a roomy two-bedroom in a very nice building, and I'm not rich. As for jobs, we're in a recession and NY has not been immune to that. Lots of places are on hiring freezes. But since you're an actress, you should probably be looking for the kinds of jobs that leave you free during the day to go on auditions. A friend of mine is an actress, so she started bartending, waitressing, and doing odd jobs. Dog walkers are in high demand too and that can pay big bucks. But in general, yes, the cost of living here is way higher than most places in the country so you'll just have to accept that. But I've had lots of friends move here from other states on their own, and they do just fine.
