if your section 8 housing is only willing to pay 700 can u go over?

if your section 8 housing is only willing to pay seven hundred dollars can you go over the limit by having someone live with you who pays the extra? example: John wants to live in apartment A for 800 a month. his section 8 is only willing to pay a percentage of 700 dollars rent at any home he lives or they wont let John live there. can John's friend Bill, who wants to live there also, pay the extra 100 dollars? will section 8 and the landlord approve this home for them?

  1. Not quite, doesn't work that way YOU pay the difference You can share, but you start the figuring all over again
  2. No, you cannot do that. You can pay the extra yourself, but you cannot take in a roommate to live with you. Sec 8 does not allow such.
  3. Yes, you can have someone live with you. However, the portion of the rent that Section 8 will pay may be adjusted. In other words, of the original $700, lets say that Section 8 would be paying $600 and your portion was $100. With the extra person, their income will be considered, which could lower the amount Section 8 pays. The $700 figure is the maximum Section 8 is willing to pay for a house in your area. The only way you can go over and pay extra is if the extra funds are going towards home ownership.
  4. No, the maximum is it. Both you and the landlord will face welfare fraud charges if the rent is higher then 700. Also, you are not allowed to move anyone in without section 8 approval. Their income will be figured in, as it is household income, not one person. It does not matter what your relationship is. This is another violation that will cause you to loose your voucher.
