How long does housing takes to give you an apartment in NYC?

i have a 2yr old daughter and i will attend college soon, i live in Brooklyn i am planning on applying to housing but i want to know if you people know tips or ways to get the apartment fast. all i need is a studio somewhere in Brooklyn and i have very low income of $12,000. please give me tips or personal experience. There is nothing fast about getting on housing. Some I have known it can take up to 6 mos before your name even reaches the top of the list. Do not put your hopes on this occuring before 2010.
Average wait is 2 years. File an application and hope for the best. With the court system finally bowing out, the city will be pushing people out of welfare hotels and into public housing. There is quite a backlog.
Homeless get first priority, everyone else gets in line. Apply at every place you can. You can probably get in somewhere in the next year. I've seen waits of up to 10 years for certain nicer buildings.
