can i get a phone from like cregs list and use it as my phone?

okay i have a motorola rival and i broke it. and now my mom wont buy one of the other phones from the verizon store cause they are way to expensive. and i was wondering if i bought a phone from cregs list will i be able to like use that as my phone?
