how to tell if a townhouse will be quiet?

I'm thinking of buying a townhouse or condo. How do I tell if it will be quiet, or if I can hear everything the neighbors do? I've been Googling trying to find sites that rate them but the only one's I've found are for apartment ratings. Is there any way to test while you are looking at a condo or townhome what the noise level will be like? @ travis... will realtors let you visit that late?

  1. once you like one, ask if you can visit again around 10 at night.
  2. stop by and night and check it out to see. interview as many neighbors as possible to ask them.
  3. With non single family residences walls are at a premium. That's why corner units or units at the end or beginning of a street/building/complex sell at a premium. Fewer walls mean less potential shared noise. You should also check w/ the HOA. Many have strict policy as to when common areas can be used. You need to be very direct and as are their rules actually enforced. If there is a pool on the property that closes at 9pm on the week days but people are there till midnight that's not good. Beside that visit the place and visit often. Asking about race or religion is illegal, but asking about average age of residents isn't. Older community = quiet community.
