- there are classes that you can take. check out your local training facilities. after your dog has done the training, you can either go to St John Ambulance or some sort of organization who offer therapy dog program, take a test there and if your dog pass, he can be a therapy dog.
- You'll probably need to provide proof from your doctor that you require a therapy dog, and be able to show the dog is trained to serve that purpose.
- Pretty sure YOU need a doctor's note (establishing your need) whether the DOG is qualified or not.
- Are you saying that if your dog is made into a therapy dog that you can keep him? You can turn your dog into a therapy dog that can volunteer at hospitals and help make sick peoples lives just a little bit better. If order to do this you need to enter obedience classes and turn him into a canine good citizen. This is a certificate given upon successful completion of a test after an advanced obedience class. Once your dog has his CGC you can bring him to therapy dog classes. He must then successfully pass another test at the end of this class in order to be a therapy dog. I would guess however that when your apartment says that they allow therapy dogs they are referring to people who are disabled that you dogs in their day to day lives, such as an eye seeing dog. You can not turn your dog into this type of therapy dog as this beings from birth and they are throughly tested and placed into proper homes. Good Luck, I hope you can keep your dog, if not I personally would find another apartment! I could never part with my best buddy.
- "Therapy dogs" do NOT have the same rights as service animals. A therapy dog is only allowed into public buildings when it is working. Having a therapy animal does not give you dwelling rights for it. You are thinking of a "service dog" one that you would need a doctor's prescription for. It would need to be trained to help you with your specific medical problem. Service dogs are not pets, you cannot just get your pet made into a service animal to get around your landlords rules! You should have thought about the building rules before getting a dog since it is now just going to be another statistic in an animal shelter somewhere...sigh...
- You don't have any idea what a therapy dog is. A therapy dog goes to hospitals and such. This will have no bearing on the lease agreement YOU signed. Move to an apartment that DOES allow for pets. If you can't move right now, have someone take your dog. I can't understand why in the world people get pets when they KNOW their leases don't allow for them! A SERVICE(which you are hoping to be declared mentally ill so you can have a companion dog) dog is another issue, but no decent doctor will illegally sign something stating you are mentally ill and need a companion dog.
- Short answer: You don't. A therapy dog is simply a pet that visits hospitals, nursing homes, libraries and schools. The handler of a therapy dog has to follow all the laws for pets; they are not different. As far as having a service dog is concerned, they are for folks who have real disabilities.....and in your case "Stupid" is NOT a disability.....
