How do you establish that you bought something off of craigslist?

I want to buy a phone off of craigslist but i don't know how to establish that I'm going to buy it without someone else getting a hold of it.

1. Email the poster and ask. As there is no legal contract established through the site, unlike eBay, the person posting the item is responsible for who they sell it to.
