What do U think Don't assume worst in Taco Bell flap clergy has jumped to the conclusion that Taco Bell is a?
Not so fast. A group of clergy has jumped to the conclusion that Taco Bell is a big, bad company for firing more than two dozen Hispanic employees in Madison and Sun Prairie. The firings followed discrepancies with the workers' Social Security numbers. "It troubles us on a moral level if hard-working people are being treated with such a lack of respect and dignity," states a June 20 letter from 16 local clergy to Greg Creed, president of Taco Bell Corp. The key word here is "if." Some facts are in dispute, and many others are unknown to the public. Moreover, federal rules on immigration and employment can be murky and at times seemingly contradictory. A business can be punished for employing illegal immigrants. A business also can be punished for firing workers -- no matter their legal status in this country -- if proper procedures aren't followed. Another possibility to consider: Taco Bell may have been sorry to see these workers go if they were doing a good job. It was the federal government, after all, that raised questions about the workers in the first place. The Social Security administration notified Taco Bell that the Social Security numbers of some employees didn't match government records. Employers are required to tell workers about the letters and to correct records as needed. So the company says it gave the employees several months to clear up the discrepancies. The clergy who are protesting Taco Bell say the workers insist they were fired on the spot. About 19 of the workers have filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission in Milwaukee. The unfortunate episode highlights Washington's failure to reform immigration policy so that it's workable and easy to follow. What the controversy shouldn't incite -- so far, at least -- is rage against a restaurant chain that may have simply been trying to follow the law. http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/opinion/458802 You see what happens when the FEDS actually do their job and why are Churches now condoning document fraud ?

- I love their fiesta fries!
- This is pure idiocy. This is what has turned the UK upside down over the last decade. We are right behind them if we don't get some leaders who know what they are doing.
- The catholic church is a criminal organization. Never forget that besides the rapist priest that the catholic church help cover for. The catholic church supported the nazis during WWII. It fits doesn't it the modern day messicons are the la raza Nazis. So of course the catholic church supports them.
- I don't think the story quite correct. I believe the Feds have rules to follow when hiring, or when discovering fraud. Document fraud. I believe the State has rules that don't account for those circumstances, and the Church is trying to use that to achieve their goal. the Solution is to make the laws conform with the new circumstances that include stolen SS Numbers... and you know... they should have done that a long time ago. It sort of looks like Wisconsin is very busy trying to screw its citizens. It would be nice to know who the clergy is. And there are not any circumstances under the sun where in a church should allow forged documents to be processed in their knowledge. Every day the government at the State and Federal Level stall, things get worse. More here, and they are saying some one at Taco Bell filled out their papers, and it isn't their fault they were wrong. http://www.workerjustice.org/ Is Taco Bell involved in document fraud? Could be.
- Did anyone else click the link/words "a June 20 letter from 16 local clergy." about a quarter of the way into the letter? The first article is contradicted by what is written in the second editorial. The quote used in your link, although you emphasis the word 'if", is originally from the first article and said because it is the clergies "who are protesting Taco Bell say the workers insist they were fired on the spot. About 19 of the workers have filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission in Milwaukee. It is said by corporation spokesman Rob Poetsch that, "We accordingly asked these employees to clear up the discrepancy and provided them several months to do so. At all times, Taco Bell has taken into account both our legal obligations and the well-being of our employees." Does that give you any insight as to why the clergies "has jumped to the conclusion that Taco Bell is a big, bad company for firing more than two dozen Hispanic employees in Madison and Sun Prairie." But let's look at what else the first article is saying. "About 19 of the former Taco Bell workers, with an average of seven years seniority...." Are you reading the same seniority average I am? Taco Bell has employed these workers for seven years and during that time no one got a hint that they were illegal? Well then either what I am reading on Answer's about illegals not paying taxes, speaking English, being gang bangers and other comments made towards describing a group of people is wrong or our government and it's citizens are so slow minded that anyone can walk all over us, lie and then just walk away. One of us know better, my thought is this story's ending just might be different than one might expect. TUE., JUL 14, 2009 - 5:10 PM 16 members of clergy protest Hispanic firings at Taco Bell By STEVEN VERBURG http://www.madison.com/wsj/mad/latest/457736 Btw checking Joel W's link I did not find anything about Taco Bell or anyones paperwork in the provided link.
- I think Chief is missing the point, it does not matter how long they worked there, how much seniority. That just means they have been breaking the laws longer. No church should but into our laws being enforced. With the government finally cracking down on illegals, the employers have no choice but get rid of these illegal aliens who have to be committing fraud or have stolen I.D.'s in the first place to have been working there. All employers should use e-verify and fire every last illegal.
- If the church is going to start trying to dictate political policy they need to lose their tax exemption. They are a spiritual adviser not a political ad visor.
