How do I go about receiving low income housing please help us?

I live in Bakersfield Ca, and I need a step by step on how to begin the process of renting a low income house for me and my family. Our county is no longer accepting section eight, so any information on other programs would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for you help:)

  1. Section 8 IS low income housing. If they don't offer it you'll have to pay like the rest of us.
  2. You just have to look for cheap apartments. Alot of them are 'based on income' but you have to actually have some sort of income to get approved. Look into some other government aid programs...wic, foodstamps, insurance, childcare, etc.
  3. Sorry to tell you this, but Section 8 is the only program available for low-income housing. Your only other option would be to try to move in with family members, see if a local church has temporary housing, check the newspaper for low cost rentals and spread the word among your friends that you need housing. If you are currently renting, or if you are in foreclosure, you might get some help from your landlord or lender. Contact them and see if there is any way you can pay less than you are paying now. Some landlords will give a good tenant a break to avoid having the house or apartment empty and bear the cost of renting again. So sorry you and your family are going through this. It is a rough time.
  4. Section 8 is "Rent Assistance" and is generally NOT the only option for low income housing, as many counties and cities do offer a low income housing program separate from the section 8 program. Here is Kern County's website for their low income housing => http://www.kernha.org/liph/low_income_public_housing.htm and their affordable housing listing => http://www.kernha.org/liph/low_income_rental_list.htm
  5. If they are not accepting applications it means the wait has gotten to 5 years anyway. We can not help you get something that is not available. You are allowed to apply in 2 counties, the one you presently live in and the one you work in.
