can I still do my taxes if I had no job?

I have been without a job this year. I have indeed been searching very hard. I have two children. My best friend told me that I must still do my taxes even through I have not worked. I told her that I can't do taxes without a job. Can someone please help me resolve this.

  1. im guessing no
  2. You didnt get taxes taken out for working did you... how would you file??? Unless maybe you have kids or something or are married. I dont get it.
  3. If you had no income, then you don't file a tax return.
  4. Definely do your taxes.. trust me.. You will get money even though you have no income. its called Earned Income Tax Credit A close friend who has one child and had very little income and collected $1,800 last year. I did not know about it till her social worker told her to look into it. I did her taxes for her, so I know it is indeed true. Check it out online
  5. No I was in a similar situation and I wanted to see if I could get the earned income credit and money back for being a single head of household with minor children so I went to H&R Block and they said if you made less than $10K you don't have to file taxes at all and if you made nothing you can't file taxes.
  6. There are only 4 ways to get a refund: Excess withholding. No job, no withholding. The only other way was to mail some in or have it withheld from unemployment. EIC. Requires earned income. Additional Child tax credit, requires earned income. American Opportunity Credit, requires having paid tuition.
  7. If you do not have any income, you do not file tax return. Even if you file with nil income, you will not get any benefit.
  8. The requirement to file a tax return is based upon your income. Assuming that you had no income for the year (including unemployment which IS taxable) then there's no need to file. There's one exception to this and it's only for 2009 and 2010. If you are a post-secondary student and paid your own tuition from your own funds or using proceeds from loans AND cannot be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer you might some benefit from the American Opportunity Credit. This credit is refundable so even if you had no income it could be worth something to you.
  9. If you had other income, like interest or stock sales, you can and might be required to file. If you got unemployment, you might be required to file depending on how much you got. But if you had no income, then there's nothing to file. Good luck.
  10. Lots of people file taxes without a job. If you have income from other sources, such as unemployment, disability, investments, alimony, and so on, you may be required to file a tax return. However, if you have no income, you will not file a tax return as there is nothing to report and no refund due.
