How to choose the right career path?

I'm fresh out of high school sitting on my grade 12 diploma. Although, I'm feeling rather strapped down considering our school counselor was never there to answer anyones career path questions... So at the moment I'm unsure where I want to be in the next 5 - 10 years, I've consulted my family and friends but none of them seem to give me worthy job/career search information. My dream job has always been fire fighter but I'm having difficulties joining the necessary programs due to limited space. I love working with my hands and helping people, should have help anyone hlep me :) Looking forward to receiving your input.

  1. You should take a career aptitude test. It might help point you in the right direction. If you are sure you want to be a firefighter and there are limited opportunities in your area, you should expand your search to the areas just outside your area. You'll probably have to live in a city to be paid to be a fire fighter. Most in rural areas are volunteer.
  2. If being a fire fighter is truely your DREAM JOB stick with it! Put all you can into doing that. I know it may be hard right now but in the long run you will be happier! Find something that you can do that is related in the meantime and while in school. If you cannot get a paid job in something related look into volunteer opportunities with the fire department. This will help you get into the programs and land a job after you have completed the programs. You will also get an idea of what being a fire fighter is like and will know if you will love it. Best of luck!
