Photoghraphy Internship in New York?
I've recently moved to NYC and am an aspiring photographer. I thought I'd try to find work assisting photographers, but no one seems to want to hire me without having assisted here in new york. Desperately wanting to get in the game and at least be exposed to the industry and meet people, I've decided to try to find an internship here in NYC and have answered some ads here on craigslist, but havent gotten any response, figuring about a hundred other people have applied for the same position. My question is....anyone know how I can get a photography internship here in NYC besides just looking at craigslist? Or any ideas how I can get into the industry here? I like this city but am finding it quite a hard place to get my foot in the door. Thanks a lot! :)

- Maybe I am wrong, but I consider Craig's List to not be where you would want to search. Plus just answering an ad does little to display any talent. As has been said, a picture is worth a thousand words. I would think you will need some type of portfolio. Get an inexpensive film camera and take some photos. You are in New York after all, one of the greatest photo ops in the world. Don't shoot like a tourist, but really strive for a different perspective on things.... just remember, that you ARE in NY, and likely anything you can think of has probably already been done by someone else... and done well. You are basically a little fish in a BIG pond. I really think you could not have picked a WORSE place to try to begin a career than in NY. The competition is just too fierce. Probably not a great answer to your question.. just my opinion... hopefully someone else can give you some real good pointers and direction. steve
- google!
- 2 suggestions: 1. Pick up the phone and go and see photographers - talk to them face to face. 2. It could be a lot easier abroad if you're American - people tend to give you just a little more time if you're obviously from somewhere else... don't underestimate the power of being different! Good luck.
