  1. Buy car, get title, register car, drive away. If you don't trust him, then why are you considering buying the car off him?
  2. be certain there is a clear title, have him deliver the car to you, then you'll at least know it was driven that (as to worthiness) far and no need to worry about how to get home with it. if totally not possible, meet him somewhere very public as scam artist will rob you,and possibly do you bodily harm, see if a local used car dealer will give you a drive away paper tag to get the car home.
  3. I would make sure I had a merchantable title to the car before I worried about a license plate...... But..... If you don't trust the guy, why would you even bother?
  4. Wait a minute! No license plate? That sounds like something fishy like a scam to me. There are lots of people scamming car sales on Craigslist. You should read http://www.howtobeatcraigslist.uni.cc and check out all the car scams they have going on.
  5. You have some uninformed answers here. Just be sure you have a bill of sale written up. Handwritten is fine; date, vehicle description, and price. Seller signs it and also gives you the all important "title" which he has signed over to you on the back side. You can take an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper and write your own IN TRANSIT signs. Be sure to put the day you bought it date on it and off you go. Get it registered the next business day and you are in business. You don't even need an IN TRANSIT sign. Just be sure you have the bill of sale, title and proof of insurance and if you get stopped, the officer will accept those papers. But you probably won't be stopped. People are so scared of simple things like that and they shouldn't be. Call Legal Aid which is free or even the police and I believe they will verify what I am saying. That should make you feel better. Good luck, I'm sure you will do fine.
  6. To move the car, you need to get insurance for as short a time as possible and go get a one-way permit from the DMV. Costs about 10 bucks here and you can drive it anywhere once.
  7. Let's get back on track here and answer the question asked. To take a car home without a license plate, you would have to trailer it, or have it towed by a licensed tow company.
