Best way to find a Search and Rescue Career?

I would like to do Search and Rescue as a main job. And by Search and Rescue I mean a group that is constantly training to stay in top physical condition for the job. I have always admired the Coast Guard, but I live to far inland. Any help?

  1. I think the Coast Guard works everywhere, where ever there is water (that's what I've been told.) Check out their website for units and careers- http://www.uscg.mil/top/units/ http://www.uscg.mil/top/careers.asp Other than that - firefighting involves a lot of search and rescue even if there isn't a fire. Those are the best options if you are looking for a group to work with to stay in shape. Other civilian possibilities are learning Community Emergency Response Training (CERT.) You receive the training in case something would happen close to home and emergency personnel couldn't help you for an extended period of time. But this would more more individual or community based, not really what you are looking for.
  2. The Coast Guard is active on any government-made lake. Firefighting would be closet to what you're looking for. All other search and rescue organizations are volunteer organizations.
