What can I do about neighbors blaming me for problems happening around our condominium complex?

I am a young college student who recently turned 21 and I am currently living with my 20 year old boyfriend in a condominium complex. I have been accused of breaking a window in our lobby and have been sent a bill for it. On the letter accompanied by this bill it said that there was a witness that saw us breaking it. Upon reading this i was like.. "This is Bulls***!" Is that right or even legal for the Home Owners Association to have done? What evidence lead them to believe I was the one who indeed broke the window? I have also gotten several complaints for not closing my garage door, which I DO leave open because it is hard for me to open and close and I did not think it was anyone else's place to tell me whether or not I should close my own garage door especially if there are no other belongings in there. My boyfriend and I have also been confronted and accused of smoking marijuana and threatened by the President of the Home Owners Association that legal action will be taken and she will have police search our unit. Other unnecessary complaints in regards to where i walk my dog also have arisen. I feel i am being targeted for my youth since the complaints about my dog and marijuana should also pertain to the other tenants in this complex. A couple of neighbors have confronted me in very rude ways telling me what I can and can't do. They have gone as far as hollering at me across the complex saying to not walk my dog in that area, etc. To me this action is embarrassing and a form of harassment. I feel they try to use me and my boyfriend as a scapegoat for problems happening around the complex all because of the fact that we are young. Little do they know that for most of my day I am not even home. I work a full time job as a legal assistant and go to school at night in hopes to become an attorney. That is why these people upset me so much! what can i do?

  1. Just make sure you aren't guilty and if they still complain lodge a complaint with the management.
  2. Can you speak with the attorny for whom you work? 1) Garage door: this is a common line in convenants. Keep your garage door closed. Get it fixed. 2) Neighbors can call the police, but they cannot search without just cause or your permission. If smoke weed, STOP. If they are called often enough and they DON'T find anything of merit you can place a harassment order. 3) Attend the Association meetings and voice your concerns. 4) Make an appointment and talk with the Assoc. president one on one (bring a witness) and ask her/him what is going on. Take notes or record the session using a tape player. Let them know you're recording the discussion. 5) READ YOUR AGREEMENT and MAKE SURE you understand all the by-laws. Are there guidelines for dog walking in the agreement? If not, they can't say anything to you other than to keep your dog off their grass. 6) Don't pay the bill. You have a right to know who the witness is. Time they "saw" you and the details. Then, see if you were at work when they "saw" you (or somewhere else you can document you were).
  3. If you don't do any of the stuff you are being accused of you shouldn't have a problem go talk with the association ask them to show you the proof of the accusations against you, but also do it in a professional matter don't give them another reason believe you would capable of the accusations. Also since you work in a law firm or for a lawyer ask them for advise or maybe they can point you to the right person for advise.
