Moving to New York City?

I have no idea where to start! I am planning a two-week trip to NYC for interviews and apartment hunting. I'll be staying with a college acquaintance (she lives in Hoboken, New Jersey). Mk, so first- flying in. I'm from Ohio, and I'm guessing I fly into JFK? Are there other airports with better deals on flights, or that I might want to avoid like the plague? As for apartment hunting.. my job will be with magazine publishing companies such as Conde Nast and Hearst, so I would like to be in an affordable area (meaning rent $1000 a month or less) where I can get to these places without too much trouble. Any ideas? I will probably utilize Craigslist, but what other ways are there to find good apartments? I think that might be all.. any other general tips? I really appreciate ANY help:D It's pretty daunting! I guess I should have mentioned I'm 22, and a roommate would be ideal:D

  1. First off, good luck finding anything in Manhattan for $1000/month. The only places I can think of that you may be able to find anything for that price are Inwood, Washington Heights, Astoria (Queens), and Sunnyside (Queens). I'm not mentioning Brooklyn because it's currently being overtaken by hipsters and developers which is bringing rents up. Plus, I just can't stand hipsters. Doubt you can get anything other than a studio apt. for that price. I live in a studio and it's fine. No complaints. Craigslist is a good place to start the hunt. Also, The New York Time, Village Voice, and LOOT papers may help. and It's how I found my place. Ever consider getting a roommate? Might make things easier and open your options more as to where you can move. As for where to fly into, JFK is definitely an option, as well as LaGuardia. You may even be able to find a better price if you fly into MacArthur Airport on Long Island and then take the LIRR into the city. Newark Airport in Jersey is an option, but I avoid it. Well, I hope I answered some of your questions. Good luck with your move.
  2. If you're pal lives in Hoboken, It would be quicker to go to Newark Liberty airport, vs. going all the way across New York City and the hudson river. Conde Nast and Hearst are located on top of subway hubs. Conde Nast above the massive 42nd-Street Times Square station. and Hearst the 59th street-Columbus Circle station. most of the city is an hour or less by subway or express bus from these two points.
  3. Hobken is sooo close to nyc so ur in luck there, and you can fly into Newark airport as well. 1,000 a month-maybe in a horrible area. definitely nowhere nice good luckkk!
  4. In regards to your first question. Since you're going to be staying in Hoboken, NJ, the nearest airport to the city is Newark-Liberty International Airport. The trip from the airport to Hoboken by commuter rail about 15 to 20 minutes and will a one way ticket will cost you about $20 bucks, which is cheaper than a taxi. Second, apartment hunting. Finding an apartment for a thousand dollars a month will be a bit tough. This is specially through in Manhattan. You might want to consider looking into the outer boroughs (the boroughs outside of Manhattan). You can also try looking for apartment in both Jersey City and Hoboken, NJ. The links below will be very helpful in the apartment hunting. http://www.findingdulcinea.com/guides.html?topic=/categories/travel/New-York-City-Survival-Guide/Apartment-Hunting-in-New-York (Apartment listing) http://www.ny.com/realestate/links.html (more apartment listings websites) http://howtorentinnyc.squarespace.com/ (Information of how to rent an apartment in NYC) I hope this information and the links provided will be very helpful. Good luck
  5. Someone else already mentioned flying into newark instead of JFK, since that's closer to hoboken. As far as rent, if you don't need to be in manhattan you should be able to find something in a nice area - especially if you don't mind having a roommate. I don't know much about hoboken, although that might be an option, but certainly there are nice areas in Brooklyn and queens where you can share a nice apartment, with your own room, for 1000 a month, or less.
