Random drug screen at Fred Meyer (union job)?
They did the pre-employment drug test but they have not told me if they do or do not do random drug testing It is a union job and i live in Oregon. Are they required to tell me they do it? If I call there human resource department will they have to tell me?

- Why do you need to know? If you are drug free (which is the way to be) ... you should be worry FREE!!!
- Hard to say. I know with my job, I had to sign a piece of paper that indicated I am subject to random testing, and following any incidents involving lost time, or equipment damage. But I am not union. Each state has their own regulations on drug testing. Since it is a union, you should have access to the collective agreement which will state their drug testing policies.
- If you are drug free, why should you care.?If you care, either work drug free or get another job. If a random screen catches you on drugs you will be fired. You will ffind that in your union contract. They screen for drugs so you will not endanger yourself or fellow employees or screw up your workplace.
- Trucking co's in this area test for drugs on a random, basis. A computer spits out a number and if that's your social security number, you go take a drug test. Some have been tested 5 times in 5 months, others , only once in 2 years ( at their bi-annual physical) Most do not care how often they are tested, it is done while they are on the clock and at no cost to them. Where else can you get paid for taking a piss?
- When public safety is in your hands while on the job (e.g., bus driver, crane operator, pilot, etc…) your company is likely required do random drug testing regardless of whether you are part of a closed or agent union, or a non-union shop. Otherwise, your privacy right and the respect for the employment doctrine of “good faith and fair dealing” may be among the negotiation items between your union leadership and the management. The employee handbook likely spells out all the details. The HR department is there to communicate the policy to you.
