Do any former/current radio deejays remember their early days in radio?

If so, how was it like? Because I'm going to school to become one.

  1. Sure. My first job was at WTAL in Tallahassee, Fla. All of the music was on records, mostly 45s. In the control room, there was an 8-channel McMartin audio board, 3 Ampro cart machines, two QRK turntables and a Revox A77 reel-to-reel mounted up over the turntable counter. The station played a light adult contemporary format with some oldies and country blended in. That might sound funny now, but it did quite well, with over a 4 share in the market. And this was an AM station with a limited coverage area. The current 45s hung on nails driven into the wall, over the turntables and below the Revox. Shortly after I started work there, I bumped a stack of those 45s, causing them to fall onto the turntable below - and naturally, it was the one with the record playing on the air that they fell onto. Despite that silly goof, I kept the job and went on to a long career in radio (1979-2004). I still do internet radio nowadays.
