Where should i stay in new york city.?

Hi All, I'm from Minnesota and will be moving to New york city as I got a job there. I have no idea where to start searching. Can you please give me some guidelines as to where I should begin my search. Some extra info. My company is located in downtown (near Times square). I'm willing to commute daily by metro train if I need to stay a bit far away for getting good and cheap housing :P Also, I'm single and might want to look for room-mates. Is craigslist a reliable place to start my search? Thanks. I will be making around 90K and I'm single (if that helps). Thank you correcting me. I remembered the cab driver saying Times square is downtown :-/

  1. Well then you better start looking online
  2. 1st off get a map. Times Square isn't downtown. It's midtown. 2nd it all depends on what you can afford and what you are looking for. If you are making $150,000+ and want to be in the center of it all. Check out Chelsea or UWS. If you are making around $50,000 and could get by with a commute, check out Middle Village, Sheepshead Bay, or try Jersey.
  3. Finding apartments that are affordable near your workplace is not to say impossible, but difficult. Especially if your looking for something cheap and safe. Sorry but I have to correct you. Times Square is located in Midtown. When you say downtown, we're talking about Wall Street/Battery Park. If your looking to get a nice studio in the city around Midtown East/Murray Hill/Hell's Kitchen, your looking at $1500 plus one month's rent and one security deposit. Some places require you have the first and last months rent in addition to a security deposit. Your going to be looking at having to fork over at least $6000 to move in. Brooklyn's price can run as high as the city (Manhattan), but the housing there is amazing. Carroll's Garden, Park Slope, Cobble Hill are all amazing places but rent is high. If your looking for a room-mate, exchange an e-mail with the person before hand. Don't give out any personal information and they shouldn't expect to see a credit report or anything. From personal experience, I met a great couple who were renting out a huge room with a private bath in their apartment on the UWS. The room and bath would have cost me at least $4000 on my own, but they were offering it for $1200 in addition to one month's security to move in. Too bad I took my time deciding cause the place was snapped up. Just beware of places that are too GOOD TO BE TRUE, they ARE. Lucky for me my sister lives on the UES. Check out nofeeapartments and citihabitats website. Side note, visit NYC for the weekend and walk around Midtown East and the various neighborhoods. The available apartments for rent will have signs posted on the building. It's better to know where your going to live than to blindly jump into things. Not mention you want to know the neighborhood and how your going to commute to work. Don't plan on having a car unless you plan on paying for parking, additional $500 a month. Personally I prefer living in the city because I spend my time here. Plus I don't have far to commute.
