How much do guinea pig owners spend per month?
I am getting a guinea pig and i need to know how much i need to spend per month. Also, I want to find a name for it. Which name do you like best for this guinea pig? http://sacramento.craigslist.org/for/1666917579.html Axel Zorro Ozzy Rusty Midget Blitz

- I currently have two guinea pigs - one male, and one female, so I keep them in separate cages. My cages are also very large (about 5 feet long, and 2 feet wide). I bought these cages so my pigs could get a lot of exercise, although you can also manage with a smaller cage. Anyway - this is what I spend per month: I buy Carefresh bedding - largest size bag. One bag fills the two cages and I do a complete cleaning on both cages about once a week. (In between cleanings, I scoop out their poops and put some fresh bedding down in soiled areas.) So for my two large cages, I spend about $80/month on bedding. (With one guinea pig in a smaller cage, this would probably be $40/month.) I also give my pigs Timothy Hay which is the healthiest hay for them. One large bag lasts the two of them about 3 weeks and costs $20/bag. So if you have one pig, this $20 bag will probably last all month. I feed my pigs "Bonanza" guinea pig food. A bag lasts the two of them about 2 weeks, and I buy the largest size for $11/bag. Then there are vitamin drops, chew sticks, wood chews, etc. I usually spend about $10/month for these. I buy all my supplies at retail pet stores and for the two pigs, with their large cages, I spend about $80 for bedding + (about) $25 for hay + $22 for food + $10 for chews, vitamins = $137/month total for me. Since you're only getting one pig and may choose to keep your pig in a smaller cage, then the total may be half that or less = $68.50 or LESS if you buy your supplies at a retail pet store. But - very important: if you buy your supplies at a store like Walmart, K-mart, etc. or buy them online, you'll probably pay less - possibly less than $50/month. As for names - the name I like best for your pig is "Zorro."
- well i spend nothing on the bedding as i use fleece bedding. i spend roughly £4 a month on hay, and that is plenty for them, i get a big bag for £1.50 at the market, every week or so. i buy a big bag of guinea pig food burgess excell and it costs me £2.50 for a big bag which lasts about a month its a complete pellet with vit c supplement in. and i but their fresh veggies which are where there extra vit c comes from. i probably spend about £2 a week on them at the market. so altogether my piggies cost me about £14.50 a month on my piggies and i have two of them. so they are not really that expensive. x oh and their 4 foot by three foot cage cost me ten pounds to make and thats just a one off fee it is a c&c cage if u google c&c cages u will see what i mean. and i think ozzy is a good name
- We spend barely any, and my guinea pigs are going strong, seven years old. What we do is give them some dinner, which will be scraps, like the peel of an apple, carrot, leftover lettuce from dinner, etc. it's very easy. Water shouldn't cost much, and bedding is recycled shredded/ripped paper or hay, but hay gets expensive sometimes at $7 a bag (australian). And I reckon for your guinea pig you should name it Rusty. :D
