Filing taxes online with 1099-G?
I am using the E-File method to file my 2009 income taxes. I received a 1099-G from Virginia Employment Commission for unemployment benefits. Do I need to "send" this form with my taxes? On the site, it has a section for a 1099-R, and under that is says "Federal income tax withholding from other 1099s (such as 1099-G). I tried to attach that form and fill it out to the best of my ability, but was rejected. The reason for the rejection is that "On each form 1099-R that is part of a return, Payer's name and Payer Identification number must be entered." There is nothing on the form that indicates that there is a "payer". Nor is there and identification number. Should I remove the form and just submit my w-2s, or is there another solution?

- Yes. you do have to send this form with your taxes, it includes income. The Payer would be the "Virginia Employment Commision" make sure that you put it EXACTLY as it appears on the 1099 the the ID may be under 'STATE ID' I live in Illinois so ours is a little different so I can't tell you exactly where to look for it
- You shouldn't be doing your own taxes. A 1099-R is for payments from a retirement plan. A 1099-G is for payments from a government (usually a state government). Did you have taxes withheld from your unemployment? If so, then you do have to send a copy of the form. If not, then you don't have to send the form with your tax return(s). I hope this helps. Gary
- Look at the form again - the payer is the state the benefits were paid by. And there's a payer id on the form somewhere - it's two digits, a dash, then 7 more digits.
- 1099-R and 1099-G are two different forms used to report different type of income. Given your understanding of this You might want to consider having a tax professional do the return.
