Is there such thing as free government grants?

I am needing some money to put vinyl siding on my house as well as replace 9 out of my 13 windows. Some people have told me to look up home improvement grants, but I have no clue where to start or what to look up. I have tried looking some up but most web sites take me in circles or want me to pay just to look at the types of grants they have to offer. I just want to know does this type of grant exist and if so where are some legit sites I can look at. My husband and I were in the process of repairing our home when he lost his job in aircraft due to the economy. He had to settle for a much less paying job. We need some kind of help. We pay or taxes and contribute just like everyone else. We aren't free loaders.

  1. yep there are plenty of programs finding the needle in the haystack is your job
  2. There never were grants for home owners. Some years ago, (but no longer) the government offered tax credits for people who winterized their homes as a means of energy conservation. But that tax credit was done away with years ago. Sorry, I know this isn't what you wanted to hear.
  3. There is no "free" money. The government MUST take it from one person in order to "give" it to someone else. Basically they are stealing from the hard working people who earn a living to give it to the people who are too lazy to earn it for themselves. I`m not talking about you. I just mean this mentality that some people have about "free" money from the government. Now, to get to your question, i dont know about grants, but you may want to check into SBA loans. These are very low interest loans provided by the government for homes. I dont know if they can be use for home repair, but i know people who used them for home purchases. It was like 1.9% interest.
