In the state of maryland is it legal for your landlord to do a random search of your apartment?

The place I'm renting warns they will be conducting random searches of our apartments looking for undocumented pets. That sounds highly illegal to me, you'd think they would have to notify you they're going to search your place.

  1. Read your lease! Usually there is a clause that allows the landlord (or agent of the landlord) to enter the property with 24 hours notice or in case of emergency. They don't have to get permission, but merely give you notice. Therefore, if they do these spot checks, they are required to give you notice beforehand by law.
  2. Not all states require the landlord to give prior notice to enter the property. Maryland is one of them. Here's the list:
  3. They are searching their place, you do not own it. They can search their property, but not yours, they can't do things like open your furnature, check pockets of clothings, etc. They can only search what they own.
