List Only

I have an Interview with housing authority for section 8, How long does it take after I get approved to get a?

voucher.

Public Comments

  1. They can print it up that day.
  2. You should get the voucher within a day or two. But then you'll have to wait for housing to become available. Sometimes that can take a long time.
  3. Waiting lists for Sec 8 in many cities are running about 5 years long. And in a few cases, the waiting list is 8 years long. If you are elderly and disabled, you should be bumped to the top of the waiting list. If you are either elderly or disabled, you should be fairly high on the waiting list. Priority for Sec 8 goes first to those who are no longer able to work and support themselves (elderly &/or disabled) and have no surviving relatives to help them.
  4. Depending on your location, it could take anywhere from six months to several years before you receive such a voucher. MOST areas have waiting lists for such voucher approval, and some areas simply have closed waiting lists, due to the number of people waiting. If you are thinking that you will receive such a voucher in a month or two, it isn't going to happen. The number of folks waiting for these vouchers is HUGE. Sec 8 funds are NOT unlimited. You can only wait until you get closer to 'the top of the list'.
