How far in advance should you search for an apartment before moving to a new state?

A family member wants to pack up and move to a new state in two months and thinks it will be easy to find an apartment when they get there. Since they won't take my advice, I am looking for stories or statistics to encourage they start the search immediately.

1. ive been searching for a month and now that i only have 3 Fridays till i move i think i have just found one but cant look at it till the 28th of the month tell your friend to start looking on like craigs list and rental helpers on line and start soon and making phone calls
2. I would start now. It took me 3 weeks to find a place. It's cost about $75 a night for a hotel/motel if they move and them look. I hope they have a job waiting.
3. They better have an agent looking for them now. Since the economy went into the crapper, people Just aren't moving out of apartments as fast as they were. Mortgages are tougher to get but, you can always renew a rental contract.
