Why do Mormon and LDS give their children both boy and girl names?
I've moved to a state that has many Mormon and LDS followers. I noticed in the Obituaries they list the departed as follows: Thomas (Katie) Young Left behind daughter Nancy (Paul), Anne (Todd), Sons Greg (Barbara), Sean (Melissa) ,so on and so on. I was wondering why the men/boys have boy names and girl names and the women/girls have both girl names and boy names.

- They were all transsexuals.
- That is their spouses name. Thomas is married to Katie, Nancy is married to Paul, Anne to Todd, etc.
- It is probably referring to a spouse.
- Those are the names of the spouses.
- Those are spouse names. It isn't just a Mormon tradition to format the list of children that way, but I don't know how widespread it is.
- I'm not Mormon, but live in Utah where 2/3rds of the population is Mormon. Are you in Utah? I never noticed that in the obituaries, but then I usually only skim the obituaries and don't read them in depth unless it's someone I know. Now you have me wondering, so later today when I read the paper, I'll pay closer attention. Though, I have noticed that many obits have wonderful things to say about the deceased...and maybe that has to do with Mormons belief of paying tribute to someone who's passed.
- Well being LDS/Mormon all of my life I honestly didn't know we did that, so I'm with the guys who say it's a reference to their spouse.
