At what point do I call off my career search and accept a survival job?

I have been searching for a career job that meets my true needs but it has been four months? Should I simply take a survival job to pay the bills, or do I keep looking for my dream job? At what point do I through in the towel and simply accept a job that pays the bills?

  1. Pay the bills or your in further trouble than needing income. Work where you can pay bills (the real point of work) and search for your dream job at the same time. Good luck :)
  2. no
  3. Looking for that Career Job in this financial climate is like looking for a needle in a haystack. You have to keep your mind open to diversify your search. One thing to remember is giving in to the pressure of needing income right now could put you on an unhappy path and that will lead you to a place that is worse than where you are. Don't apply for a job at McDonald's yet! I know because your present situation is my story. So while I know you will keep looking for that Career Job you might want to try something you have not done before that can lead to very lucrative profits and allow you some freedom at the same time. There are a few sites that offer excellent training in many topics, for making money on line. I personally like "Affiliate Marketing". You can never run out of other peoples stuff to sell on the internet! Check out one of the sites and you'll be on your way to recovery. It happened for me.
  4. Take ANY job that will pay the bills right now -- BUT, do not give up on searching for your dream job. Four months of being out of work isn't fun, but if the experience of others is any indication, you may have a lot longer to go. My advice is to apply to a few jobs that you are fairly confident you can get and fairly confident will pay your bills, while also continuing to apply for jobs you'd actually like to have long-term. Once you get a job that will pay your bills, thank your lucky stars and then keep looking around. Having a job in hand will let you breathe a little easier and take the pressure off of your job search.
  5. How long will your emergency fund last you? Unfortunately in this economy, 4 months is not long to go searching for a job. I've heard it takes a month for every $10K in salary you expect to earn, but it's probably twice as long in this recession. My advice, find something to tide you over but don't give up on searching for a new job.
