What's the fastest/cheapest way to get from Los Angeles (specifically Woodland Hills) to Mendocino?

I looked up flights, about 200+, then bus transit from Oakland -> Santa Rosa -> Mendocino. Greyhound Bus is about 82, then etc. (but takes ridiculous hours, 12+) Craigslist hitchhiking. Train. Chinatown bus. Car rental 4 days (180+). Any websites to suggest? Any ideas?

1. Look. No doubt train and buses would be cheaper for traveling. But that would not be that much interesting journey. with car renting though it would be a bit costlier than trains but it will be a joyful experience.
