How does the housing authority work?

I am a single mother looking for a way to provide my son and I place to live. I make a minimum amount of money. Can anyone please tell me how the housing authority in texas works?

1. It works the same as the rest of the U.S. You go to HUD and fill out an application for section 8 housing. They put you on the list and in about 3 yrs. they may have money to assist you. In some places the wait is 5 yrs. so get on the list now. When your name works it's way to the top of the list, you will be notified. At that time you can go into a HUD project home (commonly referred to as Ghetto Housing) or find an apt. or house on your own. If you find a house on your own, HUD will pay a portion of the rent based on your income. You will pay the rest.
2. You have to wait until they open up the list to even accept applications to see if you qualify for Section 8. Call your local HUD office and see when they may open the list again.
