How should I go about finding employment with a misdemeanor domestic violence charge on my record?

Almost every job I apply for requires a background check. I have a domestic violence charge from last year which I am very worried is the cause for my difficulty if finding employment. It is only a misdemeanor, and I usually lie on my applications and say my record is clean. Without a job I can't support myself. People make mistakes, but how can I better myself if my past is the only thing employers are looking at? What is the best thing to do about this?
