I got a job offer in Los Angeles and do not know the area--what areas should I look at for housing?

I got a job offer in LA and am browsing Craigslist for apartments and do not know the area--What areas should I stay away from crime-wise or unsafe? I just graduated college and am a white male from the eastern USA. Job offer is in Hollywood/Burbank area. Work is for a movie studio--for the sake of the studio, I would rather not say in case I turn the job down, but it is a large studio.

  1. I've lived in LA for 14 years. Every neighborhood is hit and miss, with the exception of the ultra-expensive areas. Even the Westside is tough to call without coming out to see them. (Part of Venice are WAY shady!) You'd be better off to re-post the question with the location of your job offer. LA is HUGE and to list all the bad areas would take a long time!
  2. Boobobla is right. There are too many to name. Areas to look into: Studio City, North Hollywood, the Valley. If you can afford it go with Studio City or Burbank.
  3. North Hollywood, or Burbank. There is a mountain range between Hollywood and Burbank. SO please state which. Los Feliz and Silverlake is too trendy. Hollywood could be scary or way too expensive and traffic can be horrible. North Hollywood straddles the two area and is equally accessible. There is a huge Hispanic neighborhood, some you might want to avoid. I believe they are in the North-West side. Becareful of the valley It's huge and there are a lot of bad areas, there. Some are fine too. Glendale, Burbank, and Pasadena is fine, but there are spots of bad areas too. All three has a significant areas devoted to minorities(Armenians and Hispanic.) There is a site that I don't remember that details crime in the area. The rent are kind of high in The LA area, but I'm not sure what you are expecting to pay and the area your from. I strongly suggest you don't sign a long lease until you visit the area.
  4. most north los angeles is better and safer place to live, south central los angeles is the least safe.
