Last November, I moved from NYC to Denver, Colorado. The reason for the move was to partner up with what I had been lead to believe, was a very well respected, motivated, and tenured lobbyist. After two trips, a few phone calls to people who I knew in Colorado to check on this guy, and checking the Colorado Secretary of State's website to validate his claims, I made the move. In NY, I was with the State government and worked as Counsel as well as sat on specific review boards for certain areas. Unfortunately, when I moved to state, I learned that not only was he unwilling to remove his former partner's name from the firm, but had 0 clients and 0 motivation to get new clients. In the end, I managed to land one and get two interviews with two potentials. He tanked one of the interviews and essentially tried to steal the other client. After going our seperate ways, I began to apply for any and all positions that matched my qualifications, such as landman, government affairs, public policy, legal editor, associate counsel, contract specialist, and about 10 to 15 other titled in respectve fields that I qualify for. I've been hitting the pavement, applying online through Career Builder, Indeed.com, Avuecentral, Craigslist, and a few others but to no avail. The interviews that I did manage to land never transpired into anything more, most of the times, I never even received notification about being rejected, even after a followup call or email. I've been trying average 5-10 positions per day that I am applying for and am trying to network but am getting nowhere. The temp agencies won't help because they just don't have anything matching my qualifications and the legal agencies wont touch me because I am not licensed to practice in Colorado yet and because my experience is in government affairs which they normally do not place. I've also tried the bar associations and the court systems. Applied for a few positions but have not heard anything. Moreover, the people who do offer to provide assistance usually wind up disappearing without word or sometimes admit that they spoke before they thought. It is absolutely frustrating to deal with so many flakes and jerkoffs out here but I refuse to give up. I have between 8-10 years work experience and a B.A. in Political Science, and a J.D. / admission to the New York State Bar. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to better my chances at getting hired or perhaps know anyone in Colorado that I may speak with?
