How much money is an appropriate amount for apartment rent?

I am in college and getting a single room with a bathroom and the ones I am looking at are typically 520-640 square feet. How much money per month is appropriate? Thank you! I am in West Lafayette, Indiana.

1. Hello Jessica. Anyways, it is a rule used by most banks and topline economists and it does seem to work. 33.3% of one's income on housing. Not that this might help you in your college situation, however this is only temporary. It is a fact we would all like greater digs than most of us can afford. Do with less now and build towards your future.
2. Depending on the the area & how much the market is for your particular apartment, it could be.. anything! In the New York area an apartment like you're describing might go for $500 a month, in Indiana I'd guess $200! You are a transient which generally makes the price a bit cheaper!
3. In reality, it depends upon what you can afford.
