If someone is on Section 8, how does Housing Authority make sure the right tenants are living in the apartment?

Do they have private investigators? How do they go about with the inspection? Let's say a brother and sister are living together, and they are both out working and whatnot, how will Housing Authority conduct it's checks. Are they random checks?

Public Comments

  1. They run social security numbers and check addresses and incomes. If caught you will have to reimburse the Housing dept for all funds
  2. The owner or landlord knows who is allowed to be living in an apartment and will report it to Housing if too many or the wrong people seem to be there. If you violate the Section 8 rules, you can lose your voucher. The Housing Authority inspects the apartments annually and sometimes they send an inspector out with one day notice. The is nothing against a brother and sister living together as long as both their incomes are reported and they both do the paperwork. You just cannot have roommates or unrelated people living under the voucher. The voucher restricts the size of the apartment depending on the number of people and their gender. You can both be working as long as you don't exceed your county housing income maximum.
