Places to live in Los Angeles?

I am a student, and theoretically my potential roomates and I are looking for a decent townhouse, (not a unit) with multiple bedrooms, parking, and safety in or really close to Hollywood. (Yucca and Vine). (no more than 2,000 a month) I have found a few places on craigslist, but I hear North Hollywood is a little sketchy...has anyone found or know of a good place?

1. Woodland Hills around Warner Center. Good place to live !
2. even if they look good during the day, its better to go look at night, to see whats going on, on the streets.....hookers/gangs.......its LA....
