How does one go about getting section 8 housing in the Chicagoland area?
I am really trying to find out what I need to do to get section 8 housing.

- Contact the Housing Authority in your area. The wait time is anywhere from 2 to 10 years for section 8 housing in Chicago.
- I agree with Janice about the wait time. It is like that for major cities. You can go to a smaller community and apply there but if you get a voucher from them you are required to live there 12 months unless you are already living in that county that issues the voucher. After the 12 months you can move elsewhere. Call your Housing Authority anyway because they have lists of subsidized apartments privately owned where you apply at the building and the wait is shorter but it is not a 30% of your income deal like HUD Sec 8.
